The Last Supper Museum at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. In September 2019, I fulfilled my teenage promise to one day travel to Italy to see Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, a mural that the quintessential Renaissance man painted from 1494 to 1498 in the refectory of the Dominican convent-church Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Through these photo captions, I tell my tale of flying across the Atlantic to finally view this world-renowned masterpiece during the 500th anniversary of da Vinci’s death in 1519. Alongside the photos and captions here, I’ve gathered some quotes—from the master himself, fellow artists, historians, scholars and biographers—about his revolutionary painting. http://www.kellardmedia.com/photoblog/seeing-leonardos-last-supper-in-the-flesh-a-promise-fulfilledPhoto © Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com

Abduction of a Sabine Woman (Giambologna)
Abduction of a Sabine Woman (Giambologna)Abduction of a Sabine Woman is the work of Flemish sculptor and architect Giambologna (Johannes of Boulogne). The artist’s marble masterpiece, carved from a single block of stone, depicts a young Roman capturing a Sabine woman while he steps over an older Sabine man who cowers in defeat. The sculpture was installed in the Loggia dei Lanzi at the Piazza della Signoria in Florence after its completion in 1583.
Primavera (Sandro Botticelli)
Primavera (Sandro Botticelli)Primavera (Spring) by Sandro Botticelli (1445 -1510) features nine figures from classical mythology, all associated with springtime festivals.Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, stands at the center of the garden of orange and laurel trees and 138 species of plants. To the right, Zephyr, the west wind, embraces the nymph Chloris who breathes roses and transforms into Flora, the flower goddess beside her. At the left, the Three Graces entwine their hands within a circular dance, and Mercury, the messenger of the Gods, guards the garden by keeping a cloud at bay with his staff.“[T]he painting is unquestionably a celebration of love, peace and prosperity,” according to the Uffizi Gallery in Florence where the painting is housed in a room devoted to Botticelli. But to many others, the painting, which the Uffizi dates to 1480, is surrounded by many unknowns.“Scholars have devoted a huge amount of effort to trying to trace its origins and interpret its meaning, but much about it remains enigmatic,” reads a passage in the 2008 book “Art: Over 2,500 Works from Cave to Contemporary.” I took this photo of the Renaissance-era painting during my travels in Florence in 2019.
Piccarda Donati by Giovanni Bastianini
Piccarda Donati by Giovanni BastianiniPiccarda Donati was a 13th-century Florentine noblewoman and nun who Dante Alighieri featured in his Divine Comedy as one of the first people he encounters in Paradise or Heaven. Dante depicts her as a paragon of beauty and virtue–as does Giovanni Bastianini, the sculptor of this bust of Donati from 1855 at the Pitti Palace in Florence. In reality, Donati was abducted from her monastery and forced by her brother, Corso, to marry a Florentine nobleman, Rossellino della Tosa, for political purposes, but she allegedly died of leprosy before her wedding.************************************(Photo: © Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)

Annunciation with Saints by Luca di TommèWhile I’m not religious, that certainly doesn’t mean that I cannot (greatly) appreciate art that depicts Biblical subjects, even if I may disagree with the ideas evoked by said artworks. Such is the case with “Annunciation with Saints,” an alterpiece by the Sienese artist Luca di Tommè (c. 1330–1389), whose rich and varied colors caught my eye enough to snap a photo. This painting is exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.************************************(Photo: © Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)

Assumption of the Virgin by Titian of the Virgin (Titian)
Assumption of the Virgin by Titian of the Virgin (Titian) The Assumption of the Virgin by Titian is hailed as one of the great masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance. The 21-by-11-foot panel oil painting was installed in a marble frame at the high altar of the Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice in 1518. Thereafter, Titian was treated as the leading painter of Venice. The three-tier, triangular composition depicts the apostles on the ground excitedly watching the Madonna and a group of angels ascend toward the Holy Father in “heaven.”The Frari is a Franciscan church that underwent various rebuilds after the original building was raised in the mid-13th century, to the 15th century when the present basilica was created in the late Gothic style. It houses the tomb of Titian, who died of the plague in 1576.

Bacchus by Caravaggio
Bacchus by CaravaggioCaravaggio (1571-1610) painted “Bacchus,” the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility, as part of his series of half-length portraits. Completed in 1598, the painting was donated, along with his “Medusa,” during a wedding of the Medicis, the ruling family of Florence, in 1608. I viewed and took this photo of the painting at its permanent home at Florence’s Uffizi Gallery.

Sculptor Ettore Ximenes in 1895 completed this likeness of the military leader who was instrumental in helping to unify Italy. I took this photo of the equestrian statue while on a walking tour of the city. In Italy, Garibaldi is considered one of the “Fathers of the Fatherland,” and our tour guide explained how he is to Italy what George Washington is to the United States. During his efforts at the unification of Italy’s city-states, Garibaldi fled to America and settled in New York, at the Staten Island home of fellow Italian exile Antonio Meucci, a pioneer in telephone technology. Garibaldi returned to his native land in 1854, and four years later he his volunteer forces seized Sicily and Naples, after which Italy was unified under King Victor Emmanuel. Garibaldi reportedly declined President Abraham Lincoln’s offer to become a commander in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War.

Madonna of the Magnificat by Sandro Botticelli“Madonna of the Magnificat,” by Sandro Botticelli, depicts the Virgin Mary writing the Canticle Magnificat anima mea Dominum (“My soul doth magnify the Lord”) while a pair of wingless angels prepare to crown her. The Renaissance artist painted this circular piece in 1483 and today it hangs in the Uffizi in Florence. “The originality of the work, together with the sophisticated elegance of the clothing and hair, and the grace of Mary’s engrossed expression, have, over the years, brought renown to the invention of Botticelli, whose figures embody an ideal of beauty that was greatly appreciated during the 20th century,” reads the gallery’s website about the painting. https://bit.ly/2WmA58O************************************(Photo: © 2019 Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)

The Grand Prince of Tuscany, Ferdinando de 'Medici (1663-1713) purchased the sculptural group for his villa in Rome. The statuary was installed in the large, second-floor room at the Uffizi in 1780. The original design of the room served as the basis for extensive renovations in 2013, after the weight of the seventeen statues housed there started to depress the floor.

Susann by Odoardo Fantacchiotti “Susanna” by Odoardo Fantacchiotti (1809-1877) at the Pitti Palace in Florence is based on the story Susanna and the Elders from the Book of Daniel. A Hebrew wife, Susanna, is spied on by two male voyeurs as she bathes in her garden. When she refuses to have sex with them, the men have her arrested. Several painters since the Renaissance have depicted the narrative, including Rubens, Van Dyck and Rembrandt, and some sculptors such as Fantacchiotti , who depicts her alone yet looking toward her voyeurs while covering herself.************************************(Photo: © Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)

A monument to Alessandro Manzoni by Francesco Barzaghi at the Church of San Fedele in Milan. A monument to Alessandro Manzoni (1785-1873), an Italian novelist and poet, stands outside the Church of San Fedele in Milan. Francesco Barzaghi sculpted the bronze statue of the Milanese man of letters in 1883. Manzoni reportedly suffered a fatal head injury when he fell attending a mass in the church. Designed by architect Pellegrino Tibaldi, the Jesuit church was completed in 1579, but the facade was not constructed until 1835, under the direction of architect Pietro Pestagalli. ************************************(Photo: © 2019 Joseph Kellard/kellardmedia.com)
