The Cavalier, Miami Beach The Cavalier is a boutique hotel in Miami Beach (at 1320 Ocean Dr.) that was designed by Chicago architect Roy France and constructed in 1936 as part of a building boom of Art Deco-style structures. The hotel underwent an extensive restoration in 2015 and retains its original façade sporting a central panel that commands its sense of symmetry. I took this photo of the Cavalier while on a tour of Art Deco buildings in South Beach in 2019.

The Robert and Arlene Kogod Courtyard at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. underwent a redesign in 2007, converted from an open-air facility to a steel-and-glass enclosure. The canopy, designed by architect Norman Foster, features 864 panels.At 28,000 square feet, the courtyard is among the largest indoor public spaces in the nation’s capital. The planters and water scrims on the floor were designed by landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson.The museum—originally the home of the nation's Patent Office, the third public building constructed in Washington after the White House and Capitol—was opened in 1968.
