My photo of the right hand of Michelangelo’s David holding a stone appears on page 41 of the book “Michael Bockemühl, Kunst Sehen, Michelangelo.”

My First Photo Printed in a Book

Joseph Kellard November 16, 2023

The Frankfurt-based Info3 Verlag recently published “Michael Bockemühl, Kunst Sehen, Michelangelo,” which features my first photo printed in a book, an image of a hand of Michelangelo’s David.

Available only in German, the book is based on a lecture about the Renaissance sculptor by Michael Bockemühl, the late art historian and professor at the University of Witten-Herdecke. I was informed that his lecture highlights details of Michelangelo's sculptures. And so, my photo of David's right hand, where the sculptor carved intricately between the fingers and rock, was ideal for the book.

The book is based on a lecture by Michael Bockemühl and published by the Frankfurt-based Info3 Verlag.

This professional milestone is particularly gratifying given the thought, effort and time I invested in photographing the David at the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence. I likely spent a good hour circling the colossal Biblical figure, navigating through the numerous museum-goers, to capture him from various angles and zoom in on his details. I easily snapped well north of a hundred photos.

Before Witten-Herdecke’s representative contacted me to buy my photo for the book, I was energized to produce a photo-filled article about my experience capturing perhaps the world’s most celebrated sculpture. Notably, I wrote:

“I was drawn to the master’s attention to subtle anatomical details, such as the fold over David’s navel and the veins branching across his right hand that holds a rock.” (Emphasis added)

The book features all high-quality images, including a series of full-length photos of the David and Michelangelo’s Baccus, individual shots of his allegorical figures on the Medici tombs and a closeup of the relief Battle of the Centaurs. I’m proud that this handsome volume included my photo (on page 41).

The list of works and picture credits in the book.

I expect this to be the first of my photos featured in many art books and other publications.

Finally, if you visit my website and find an image that you would like to publish in a book or purchase for some other purpose, please contact me here: www.kellardmedia.com/contact.
